The December Students of the Month at the high school are freshmen Chris Smith and Evie Crisp. Chris is the son of Sharevia Harrison. He is a running back on the varsity football team, and he also plays basketball. His favorite class is history, and outside of school, he likes to play video games. Chris would love to one day play in the NFL. Evie Crisp is the daughter of Chad and Christine Crisp and Glenn and Tara Lankford. She is a varsity cheerleader, basketball player, a member of powerlifting team, and she is active in FCA. She enjoys both Spanish and biology; she claims that they alternate as her favorite class depending on the day. Outside of school, she enjoys going to church and practicing gymnastics. She hopes to one day go to college to learn more about religions and work with a ministry.

“Oh give thanks to the lord, for is good, for his loving kindness is everlasting.”- Psalms107:1 People associate many different things with Christmas, but there are several students who feel strongly about the true meaning of the season. “In my opinion, the true meaning of Christmas is our lord and savior because he died on the cross for our sins, and it was the day that our savior was born,” junior Natalie Parker said. “In my house, on Christmas day we go to church. Just keep in mind he is the reason we celebrate Christmas.” Another important aspect of the Christmas season is family. “Many people think of Christmas only as a time for presents, food, and jesus, but they forget that family is the reason we get presents, the reason we have Christmas dinner, and the reason we are here to celebrate Jesus’ birth,” sophomore Gabby Cupp said. “So, this Christmas, enjoy the company of annoying in-laws, terrible children, scary old people, and whoever else might creep up into your house on Christmas day.” Speaking of family, a good way to bring people together is by having a family dinner. “To me, Christmas would not be the same without my family gathering around the table about to eat a delicious meal,” sophomore Brenaaya Patterson said. “I can still remember my mom and I in the kitchen making fudge and other mouthwatering treats for our family. I will never forget it, for they are some of the best memories of my life.“ By: A. Simmons
This year’s spring One Act Play for UIL competition is “Alice in Wonderland.” This play is about a group of actors who want to put on “Alice in Wonderland” but have one problem: they lack an Alice. The cast includes: Cheyenne Earl as Alice, Chesley Swilley as the White Rabbit, Abbi Jose as the Mouse, March hare, and Mock Turtl, JAcob Begin as the Frog Footman and King Of Hearts, Makenna lewis is the Duchess, hannah Wheeler as the Fish Footman/Cook, Lynnleigh Otwell as the Cheshire Cat, Bailey Lemmons as the Dormouse, Anna Beth Simmons as the Mad Hatter, Caitlyn Martin as the Queen of Hearts, and Kaitlyn White as the Gryphon. Director Krystal Woodley says that “Alice in Wonderland” didn’t even cross her mind as a competition play at first. “I wanted to attempt a greek tragedy,” Woodley said. “I began to think that my my actors should perform something high energy and comedic since they did such a great job with the comedy in ‘Just Desserts.’ Kaitilyn Woodley suggested it, and I honestly thought our kids would hate it, which is why I made her suggest it/ Everyone squealed in excitement instead, and here we are now.” By: F. Boy’s basketball has just begun. The team started off the season with a big 86-28 win against Avinger. “I think this season has the potential of being a great one,” Coach Chaston Pruitt stated. “We have a great nucleus of senior leaders that can really handle the basketball. I am really excited for their future success.” The goals for this year’s team are set high; they are hoping to make it to postseason. “My goals for the team is to make it past the postseason first and foremost,” Pruitt said. “I know it hasn't been done in a while so I would like to see that. Also, I would like more superlatives for our team so that they get the recognition they deserve.” The team prepares for these goals by coming into practice and giving it their all each and everyday. “Our team will come into practice with a mindset of being better than the day before and out-working other teams,” Pruitt said. “If we do that, I could see us in San Antonio in March.” Coach Pruitt has brought something new to the table this season and says the boys are adjusting well. “The sky is the limit with regards on how far the team can go,” Coach Pruitt says. “I bring a fast brand of basketball, and they are adapting to it pretty well.” On Thursday, December 8th, a new height in his career was reached.. “I am 51-29 as a head coach,” Pruitt said. “I just achieved my 50th win this past Thursday.” The staff would like to congratulate Coach Pruitt on this milestone, and we wish the Jackets good luck on the upcoming season! Walking through the halls, there are bright fun colors and crazy designs covering many of the teachers’ door. There is a Christmas door decorating competition going on between the teachers at the high school, and the teachers are taking it seriously. Whoever wins the best door gets a prize. 1st place wins a $50 gift card, 2nd wins a $20 gift card, and 3rd wins a card worth $10. Clearly the school is getting into the Christmas spirit, but let's be real, when there's money involved everyone will participate. I asked one of our very beloved teachers how she came up with her door idea. “I saw the idea on Pinterest,” English III teacher Amanda Ware said. “I wanted to make people laugh, so I knew I had to do something really funny. I could never compete in athletic competitions, so when it comes to stuff like this I get competitive.” All the students love these doors, but some feel certain doors stand out more than others. “Mrs. Ware’s door stood out the most because I like Buddy the Elf, and she used the elf theme,” sophomore Haley Horton said. “The faces of the elves on the door could brighten anyone's day.” Most of the teens seemed drawn to the funny doors. “I like Coach Ratliff’s door,” junior Maegan Honeycutt said. “I like how they decorated his gold tooth and the sparkly eyelashes and lips they added.”” The whole school had a ton of fun helping the teachers decorate. The decorating of the doors got everyone excited, and we all came together as a family for the spirit of Christmas. By: B. Ebarb
Other than Valentine’s day, Christmas is the holiday when women expect to be showered with gifts from their lover, such as shoes, puppies with big red bows, gift cards to Victoria Secret, or that special ring from David’s Jewelry. If you find yourself stuck between a rock and a hard place this holiday when it comes to gift ideas for that special lady, consider this article your saving grace. The first thing you should never do is wrap something in a perfect little box that could hold the engagement ring she has been repinning on pintrest and tagging you in for the past 8 months (unless, of course, it is the engagment ring). No woman wants to practice her excited crying face in the mirror just to open this delicate petit box, only to be baring your Aunt Eugene's cactus brooch from the medieval times. If your wife does your laundry, cooks your food, and puts down the toilet seat after you, I can assure you she does not want to open a gift that is another item she could use for you. This includes things such as: a mop, a vacuum, hangers, a new duster, pots and pans, streak-free glass cleaner, or an old at-home concoction that your mother sent you via e-mail to remove the lime from the tile creases in your shower. Last, but most certainly not least, is nothing. Asking a woman what she wants for Christmas is almost identical to asking her where she wants to eat for dinner in the fact that about 99.9% of the time, the answer will always be, “I don’t know/care.” Fellas, your lady cares. Trust me. The worst thing you can do is leave your woman stranded with no gifts on the one day she expected to get something. Then how will she post how much she loves you on social media for all of her 827 friends on facebook to see? If you’re still dazed and confused on what the lady of your life may want this holiday, please allow me to help fill that head of yours with a few ideas. Women would enjoy getting chocolate, jewelry, makeup, flowers, a gift card to the spa, or even a day pass to slip away and enjoy her day not worrying about where your other sock for work is. As always, Merry Christmas! <3 By: K. Marcantel
5...4...3...2...1. Happy New Year! The new year is coming up, and people are making up resolutions and plans for 2017, hoping this will be their year. Like last year was supposed to be...and the year before that and the year before that. Every year, people worldwide still make that resolution to lose weight, become a better person, take risks. They may not always work out, but resolutions are still a well-known and enjoyed tradition of celebrating a new year. “My News Years resolution is to save all the cats in the world that are abandoned,” sophomore Harleigh Whitehead said. “First, I have to find every stray cat I can, and once I do that, I just put them all my bedroom. Then I’ll feed them… and bathe them… and cuddle them. If my room gets too crowded, then I’ll move them into the rest of the house. As long as my mom doesn’t mind all the cat hair on the bar.” Spending New Years with kittens is great, but there are other ways to enjoy the start of an upcoming year. “I’m going to be spending the day with my family,” sophomore Haley Horton said. “We’ll eat Christmas leftovers and pop fireworks. I’m usually the only one that stays up to watch the ball in New York drop, but I stay up until 1 in the morning to watch Supernatural every night anyways.” With the new year on it’s way, people are hoping for a change or are hopeful in general for a new year, new them. “I’m excited for 2017,” English III teacher Amanda Ware said. “I hope that 2017 will be better than 2016 and that everyone in my family will be healthy and happy. I’m also really excited to move into my forever home with my family.” Family and food, friends and fireworks. The new year is on it’s way, so write up your resolution, make plans with friends, spend some time with family, and enjoy 2K17. By: S. Carson
Rudolph Claus is the youngest and most important reindeer in the North Pole. He is the only reindeer with a glowing red nose. This makes him essential to Santa's team of reindeer because without him, Santa couldn't see through all the winter weather such as sleet, snow, and rain. Our team was very excited to interview Rudolph, Dasher, Santa, and Mrs. Claus on a recent trip to the North Pole. “I had always dreamed of being in the on the team with the rest of Santa's reindeer,” Rudolph said, thinking about the days when he was a tiny reindeer growing up in the North Pole. Rudolph’s nose is an essential part of Santa’s whole operation. “Rudolph is my favorite and most special reindeer; without his nose lighting the way, I wouldn't be able to deliver presents”, Santa said. “Rudolph’s nose lights the way for me to see in order to deliver presents to all the good boys and girls.” The reindeer around the North Pole used to laugh at Rudolph because he was different, but things have changed. “Rudolph is a great, young reindeer. I love him very much,” Dasher said. In the beginning all the reindeer gave him a very hard time, but when he saved the day he became adored. “All the reindeer like Rudolph, and so do I. He is the sweetest, most well-mannered, caring reindeer we’ve had on the team,” Mrs. Claus said. Rudolph and the rest of the team have been working hard to prepare for the big day. They will be traveling to Texas next week. Merry Christmas! By: M.Fitzgerald
From Monday, December 5th through Wednesday, December 14th, the school did a food drive to help a local families enjoy a Christmas dinner during the holidays. “[The high school’s food drive is] where you collect food and you give it to the less fortunate families,” sophomore Bailey Lemmons said. Unlike most food drives, the food collected at the high school goes directly to the homes of the recipients, not to a food bank, in order to provide them with the ingredients for a full holiday meal. “It affects how many people look at us and it affects the less fortunate families,” freshman Brooklyn Marasco said. The school has held this food drive for several years, and the students understand its importance. “It’s important because we are helping who are less fortunate and can’t afford a special meal during the holidays,” sophomore Haley Horton said. The food drive is looked forward to each year by both students and teachers. It’s a special thing to be able to provide local families with a little holiday magic each year. By: Y.Jones, J.Locke, L.Hudson After a downright wholesome teen birthday party, three girls are kidnapped in broad daylight: friends Claire and Marcia, and the difficult outsider Casey. Their captor locks the trio in a windowless room, then proceeds to frighten and baffle them. One minute he’s blind and obsessive about cleanliness, the next he’s acting like a female, and later he acts like a nine-year-old boy.The captor’s appointments with his psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher, reveal that he has dissociative identity disorder, what used to be called multiple personality disorder, and is hosting a whopping 23 personalities, known as “alters.” His real name is Kevin, although he visits the doctor as Barry, but might currently be Dennis in disguise. Kevin’s dominant identity, Barry, has been overcome by unwelcome alters he previously put an end to. Dennis and Miss Patricia are responsible for the teens’ abduction, hinting that the girls will be handed over to a mysterious entity known as The Beast. As Dr. Fletcher tries to figure out exactly what happened to Kevin and how it can be fixed, Casey’s flashbacks to childhood indicate she isn’t quite as unspoiled and naive as her captor believes the other girls to be. This movie comes out January 20, 2017, so be sure to mark your calendar. This movie is worth the wait. |
