By: C. Lawless The volleyball team has had a huge start to their season so far. They are 6-3 in preseason. There has been two new additions to the coaching staff, assistant coaches Sean Struwe and Mackynna Evers, and head coach Crystal O’Brien is returning. While only losing one senior last season, the freshmen and returning players are filling in all holes. “Our one and only freshman, Madison Owens, has definitely stepped up and is playing to the best of her abilities every game,” sophomore Gracey Struwe said. Many are having high hopes going forward in the season. “My expectations are to win more games than last year and at least go to the playoffs,” junior Kerrigan Love said. For some this season will be bittersweet, as it will be their last. “I am really looking forward to playing the rest of my senior season with all of my amazing teammates,” senior Kyleigh Griffin said. The JV A and B teams will have a tournament this Friday and Saturday in Henderson. The varsity team will have a game this Friday in New Diana starting at 4:30.

By: K. Stephens As the new school year has begun, we’ve been introduced to our new administrative staff and returning workers in new positions. Krystal Woodley has been moved to assistant principal after being a teacher at Elysian Fields for 13 years. Chaye Massey came to Elysian Fields this year and has taken over the role of high school principal. Massey comes to Elysian Fields after several years serving as an assistant principal at Hurst Junior High. “My wife and I wanted to move to a small community to be in a good school district for our four children and Elysian Fields checked all the boxes,” Massey said. “My favorite part about being a principal at Elysian Fields Highschool is working with all these amazing students and terrific teachers.” Massey has several specific goals he’d like to accomplish. “I’d like to continue to grow our Ag program and UIL Academics and build new relationships with our students,” Massey said. Mrs. Woodley has been enjoying her new position. “I am excited for things to level out after scheduling changes so I can be more present, but I have really enjoyed it thus far,” Woodley said. “I also have a much greater appreciation of administrators now that I am on the other side.” By: A. Traveling is one of the most popular things to do in summer. This past summer many students decided to go on vacation and made memories while doing so. Some students traveled to busy cities with much to do. “My favorite things to do in New York was shop and eat at the cool restaurants they had,” junior Jaicey Rich said. Most went to chill places and had a relaxing time. “I enjoyed driving to the public beach, jumping off the bridge and talking to new people,” sophomore Ava Henigan said. Others traveled to spend time with family. “I spent time with my family and kayaked 8 miles down the caddo river racing my cousins to the end,” junior Sailor Paine said. Many memories were made this past summer, but unfortunately all good things must come to an end. School is back in, and it’s going to be a great year! By: Baylee Marcum
Excitement flows over the band hall as the students prepare for band camp to begin. The Jacket Pride Band started band camp on July 27. The seniors are excited to begin their final year of band, but things are different this year with the new head director. “I feel good,” senior Sierra Mathis said. “I was worried at first that no one would respect her. This year is going better than I expected.” The band members had a blast playing games and eating dinner together as a family at the band camp social. “My favorite part of band camp was our band camp social night,” band director Tiffany Tanuyan said. “I had a great time watching kids chase each other in capture the flag. I even enjoyed watching Jaicey Rich getting stuck in a closet and Kylie Dudley screaming as she got ice water poured on her head.” Some band members will miss the seniors that they look up to and go to for help. “It makes me sad that this was my last band camp,” senior Teresa Hall said. “The band will always hold a special place in my heart. This year has made me realize that we are close to growing up and leaving the band forever.” By: J Rich
As the school year starts, athletes are seeing new faces coaching them. These new coaches include: Mackyla Evers, Jonathan Boone, Ed Oden, Justin Crow, Wynn Short, Justin Hadwin, Tanner McGee, Tony Norwood, David S. ‘Doc’ Schiller, Lacey Solis, James Walker and Blake Wolfe. The new coaches are excited for this new start and to see what the season holds. Some coaches had complex backgrounds before their time coaching. “During high school and in college I played sports,” Oden said. “Fitness was also very important during my years in the Marine Corps.” So far, coaches said they have had great experiences and are very happy here. “The small, familiar atmosphere pulled me to Elysian Fields,” Evers said. “I grew up in Harleton, and the small town feel is just like home. I am loving it here! Everyone has been so friendly and welcoming.” There were certain aspects that appealed to the new coaches when applying for the job. These are the same things that excite them about the upcoming season and what it will hold. “What I find appealing about coaching in Elysian Fields is the rich tradition from athletics, the expectation to win, and the commitment from the athletes,” Boone said. “This was one place that if I ever got the chance to come to I would be here in a heartbeat.” by: Ava Henigan Cheerleaders pick up their pom poms and prepare to cheer on the Jackets. Their adrenaline is rushing through their veins as they are yelling and getting the crowd fired up. They chant, cheer, and have fun.
“My favorite part about cheer is getting to cheer on our football boys on Friday night, and doing stunts,” junior Kloe Golladay said. The cheerleaders have been putting work into the upcoming pep rallies and getting ready for Friday Night Lights. “This year, we plan to get everyone hyped up for the football games and we have a lot of fun themes planned to get as much participation as possible from the students,” senior Kyleigh Griffen said. Cheerleaders new to the squad are excited to experience the atmosphere of FNL. "I am so excited to be on varsity this year with such an amazing team,” sophomore Lizzie Hutson said. “I am looking forward to Friday nights.” Come out and watch our cheerleaders at every pep rally and football game! Students filling the halls, teachers getting lesson plans all set. Lunch ladies ready to serve smiling faces. It’s time for back to school. As the 2022-2023 school year is beginning, many students are ecstatic to be back. “I'm stoked for this new school year,” junior David Hutson said. “With all the new changes, it's an opportunity for us as a school to get out of our comfort zone, to become flexible and grow, and hopefully push us to get better. Personally, getting back in the classroom to compete will be great.” Getting back into the classroom is not the only thing Hutson is looking forward to. “I'm very excited about our new coach in basketball this year and already know there will be major improvements,” Hutson said. “I also feel we have an excellent shot to go far in the playoffs for baseball. We have a lot of returning talent and with our new baseball coaching staff, it should be a winning season. As a school, we have a lot to look forward to!” For many, sports are the most exciting part of the school year. “This year I am most excited about going to the football games and playing basketball with all of my friends,” junior Emma Carrington said. Some students are optimistic that sports are headed in the right direction this school year. “I think that we are setting up for a good year athletically,” senior Grant Sims said. “The new coaching staff is showing promising results, and I am interested in seeing the outcome. I find that the fall and spring sports will excel at a level that we haven't seen in a long time, just like the start-of-the-year sports. I am extremely excited to see all of our athletes crush it.” By. K. Anderson
Due to recent tragic events in Texas, the school is now taking many safety precautions necessary to keep the students as safe as possible. In order to keep the students safe the school will perform drills to keep students informed on how to handle any situation. “Drills are nothing to new to us,” senior Cora Creech said. “We go through drills every year to make sure we remember everything we need so we can be safe. I just hope no one actually freaks out when its time for the drill.” Be prepared to be interviewed every time you roll out of bed a little too late and come past the tardy bell. “All visitors or late students will have to confirm their identity and provide reason before entering the school,” secretary Shannon Canton said. Everyone knows when they hear that certain knock from a certain person to open the door right? Well, not anymore. “Students are no longer allowed to open the door for anyone,” assistant principal Krystal Woodley said. “If a door needs to be opened, the student must find an adult to open the door.” Other precautions like extra fencing and updated locks are currently in progress. `The band blares as the football players run out of the tunnel. The tunnel shakes, and the crowd roars as the boys excitedly hit the field. The Jacket football practices and scrimmages have begun to prepare the team for the upcoming season. This season looks a little different with the addition of a new head coach and many other coaches. “I expect to have a great football season,” athletic director Justin Crow said. “We lost a lot of experience so we will be young, but the players are adjusting well to the new offensive and defensive schemes.” With the addition of many new freshmen, the team chemistry has to be rebuilt. “This season will go pretty well as long as we all keep working on becoming a team on the football field,” senior Bubba McPhail said. With the intention of making playoffs, the boys first have their sight set on a district championship. “We have a lot of talented players returning, and I think it will be a good year,” senior Wesley Brown said. “Hopefully we can make some noise and win district.” The boys will play Dekalb this Friday at home. |
