Blonde hair, blue eyes, perfectly straight white teeth, and skinny. Some might not admit it, but most people tend to think “perfect” when imagining or seeing someone who looks that way. But is this always the vision of ideal beauty? Lots of specific qualities make up the human idea of “perfect.” Most people are pressured to fit the status quo set by others. Girls are expected to be skinny, tall, blonde, and have blue eyes. Guys are expected to be buff, tall, and “Abercrombie-model handsome.” This doesn’t have to be the idea of beauty. Maybe the real idea of true beauty is originality. “For guys, we have to be not too tall, but not too short,” sophomore Jebb Dickson said. “Guys have to be muscular, have shaggy, but not buzz-cut hair, and be tan with a nice jaw line. We’re expected to know outdoors things, to be and look manly. [But] A beautiful man is someone who is himself.” Girls are also put to the test when it comes to “true beauty.” “Girls are expected to have long, silky hair,” freshman Haley Horton said. “We have to be skinny, but with curves, short, or at least shorter than the boyfriends we’re “supposed” to have, and pretty with or without makeup. Most people wish perfect was inside, not outside, but society has taught the opposite.” Society has found a way to change our perspective on idea beauty. We think now that other people’s opinion on how tall or short, skinny or far, or popular or nerdy we are determines our beauty. It’s time we realized that true beauty is originality, and “perfection” isn’t in the eye of the beholder, but in ourselves.

Martin Luther King Day was Monday, January 21. There have been a lot of positive, uplifting posts since the holiday, and this shows how much this world has changed since Dr. King’s time. Martin Luther King Jr. was an African American Baptist Minister, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African American Civil Rights Movement. Many people feel different ways about Martin Luther King Day. “It is a special day for black people because it shows how much the world has changed,” sophomore Nikayla Tatum said. Martin Luther King Day has a different meaning to everyone. “It signifies how far we have come, and I feel like it has gotten way better,” junior Caytlen Vowell said. He made a big difference in the world, and he has brought people together. Some people believe that Martin Luther King should not simply be celebrated on one day. “I feel it [the celebration] should go on throughout the whole year,” sophomore Mollie Pless said. Martin Luther King has a lot of amazing quotes. “‘I have a dream’ is one of my favorite quotes by Martin Luther King,” sophomore Nick Fottenbury said. Martin Luther King also said many other inspirational things, including the following quote: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” By: A. Roberson
Valentine’s Day is on its way. This is a wonderful day for all the lovely couples. There are chocolates, flowers, gifts, and lots of love. “I like Valentine’s Day because I get a lot of candy, and it’s a good day for people who are in a relationship,” Ashley Walton said. Even if you’re single, it’s alright. “I like this day because you get to buy yourself something and pretend someone else bought it for you,” Kaziyah Johnson said. Gifts are special to receive. “For Valentine’s Day I want some candy, a big teddy bear, a rose, a valentine’s card, and some money,” Nikayla Tatum said. Gifts are more special to receive from your valentine. “Last year for Valentine’s Day, my boyfriend got me a huge teddy bear, a big box of chocolate, and some Victoria Secret clothes,” Kimmorah Johnson said. Valentine’s Day is a beautiful day filled with lots of love. By: A. Paulk
Valentine’s Day is coming around, and this one is for the singles when it comes to this holiday. “When you get the nasty chocolates in the chocolate boxes. Also all the gross, sappy photos couples put on social media about how much they ‘love each other.’ That’s honestly the worst part of this holiday,” sophomore Faith Harris said. Lots of people hate this holiday for many reasons, but a main one is loneliness. “I envy couples on this holiday because they’re all over each other and it makes me super lonely and annoyed,” sophomore Jacqueline Jenkins said. Some people view this holiday in an offensive way. “I think it’s messed up that for one day of the year you’re expected to love someone and shower them with gifts,” sophomore Tramell Anderson said. “You should do this year round.” Then there are the people that complain about having to do so much for one person. “It’s so expensive because I have to buy so many gifts for someone who will probably lose or forget about them within a week,” sophomore Jeb Dickson. So far all of the singles out there, here’s hoping the holiday passes quickly! By: S. Draper
Straight Outta Compton is a smash hit movie that showed the real and true life struggle of black rappers back in the day. “I thought it was a good time for the movie to come out because of how the cops were killing so many black men,” sophomore Nikayla Tatum said. Some believe the movie made a difference in how people look at rappers now. “It shows how hard it was for black rappers to make it big because they were always being judged and not allowed to rap about what they really wanted because it spoke the truth,” sophomore Ashley Walton said. The last part of the movie was almost hard to watch. “I felt sad because Eazy E really wanted the group to get back together, but he died before they could,” sophomore Kimmorah Johnson said. This movie had a great impact on many people and made them really think about what really happened in the 90’s in the city of Compton. By: M. Pless
The most popular candidates of the presidential election are Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sanders. The rivalry between all of the candidates has been going on since the beginning of 2015. Based on what you know about the United States, which candidate are you rooting for? Jeremy Hale is a man that identifies as a Libertarian that is rooting for Donald Trump. ”As always, I’m not all that impressed with our choices, but like many Americans, I am sick of how career politicians make promise after promise and then act like those that came before them…” Hale said. “That being said I am voting for Donald Trump… Political correctness is destroying this county, and Trump is the least PC candidate we have to choose from… Sure, sometimes he represents the majority of everyday common Americans… He is not afraid to make enemies to make America great again, and that’s what we need…” “I’m a fairly progressive constitutionalist… I see a lot of issues with the two-party system that has steadily sent out of county into a tailspin… But I love America, and I wish the people would remind our government who their bosses are. –‘We The People’… Junior Alanna Lawrence has a different point of view on the subject. “Personally, I find both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton to be shoo-ins for the election,” Alanna said. “I’m still waiting on the republican hero to swoop in last minute. Anyway, I’m hoping for Bernie Sanders. I like his ideas, and I feel like he would bring a lot of good things in his term. I don’t know the other republican candidates, besides Trump. Hillary is just trying too hard in my opinion.” One blogger on debate.org thinks that Hillary Clinton would make a good president. “Hillary Clinton has so much experience with politics, having been the first lady for 8 years, and having been the senator of New York and also working under the Obama administration, it is incredible,” she says. “I think she could make a wonderful president, and hey we would finally have a female president. I also like her views on foreign policy.” Another blogger on debate.org thinks that Ted Cruz should be president. “Although he may not be eligible, he has the Character and endurance to pull it off,” he says. “The man plays a long game. Everyone keeps talking about silly his filibuster was and how radical his base is, he is the only Politician who enjoyed a sizable boost in popularity from the shut-down. This guy is adored by the Conservative voters, because he actually does what he promised to do. I personally find him brilliant. His filibuster was an excellent move. Why? In every Republican district across America, Senators and Congressmen campaigned on one issue: ‘ I will repeal Obamacare, if I'm elected.’ Ted Cruz stood for 21 hours and read letters from the voters. For 21 hours, all of the GOP had an opportunity to support him. Either through speaking, or simply by standing next to him.” The presidential election will take place on November 8, 2016. Who will you vote for? The sophomore class has been debating for a while on what to do for a fundraiser for their senior prom.
Many suggestions have been made. The sophomore class has no money saved and only a few more years to go. “Most of the fundraisers we have done haven’t made any money,” sophomore Nikayla Tatum said. The 10th grade class has suggested a golf tournament. Many of the sophomore classes agreed to attend the event. I believe that the sophomore class will raise a lot of money during the event because of how many people play golf in the community,” junior Caytlen Vowel said. Many sophomores have also suggested a Valentine Day dance. 80% of people have surveyed decided that they might attend the dance. “A Valentine’s Day dance would raise a lot of money and attract a lot of young couples,” Ashley Walton said. The sophomore class needs to raise at least $5-$6,000 for a good senior prom. By: N. Tatum
New Year’s resolutions are people’s goals for the beginning of the year. The main goals that people have are usually to lose weight, cut people off, and/or have a new attitude. Even though people say what their goals are, they often still don’t accomplish them. Not everyone has a New Year’s resolution. “I feel that it is everybody’s opinion to do something different, and some people believe that they are find the way they are,” sophomore Kaziyah Johnson said. Some people have specific goals in mind. “My new year’s resolution is to lose weight because I am not at the ideal weight,” sophomore Aaliyah Roberson said. New Year’s is a day where everyone wants to make a new start and leave everything or everyone negative in the year before. “I want to be a better person and go further in life,” Kaziyah said. By: H. They slave over an oven, preparing food for a whole school, but they do not seem to get the respect they deserve. The ladies in the cafeteria work all day long. Not everyone realizes the hard work that they do. “It’s hot as heck, so much I sweat like a horse,” lunch lady Marla Whitehead said. “It’s so tiring on my feet and back. We sweep, mop, wash dishes, and count the food. We even weigh the food, wash towels, do laundry, and clean the trash cans." This lady works so hard doing her job, and is very exhausted in the end. “On my way home it feels so great. I love my job, but I also love the ending of the day”, Marla said, “Everyday when I arrive home, I go straight to my bedroom. I try not to, but when you have a bad back and aching feet, you really don’t have a choice.” There are some special things that come with working in the cafeteria. “The staff is caring and friendly. It almost makes you feel like you’re surrounded by family,” Marla said. By: A. Walton
Blue Bell is back and better than ever. Dougs is selling out of the sweet treat faster than the crispitos in the cafeteria. “My favorite ice cream brand would be Blue Bell,” sophomore Hannah Wheeler said. Many others agree. The multiple flavors make for an assorted collection of greatness. “Blue Bell is my favorite brand; also there are several great flavors and tastes,” sophomore Savannah McNeill said. Blue Bell flavors include: Cookies and Cream, Vanilla, Mint, and many more. “My favorite Blue Bell flavor is Cookies and Cream,” Nikayla Tatum said. So run on down to Dougs and grab some Blue Bell while it lasts! |
