Some people think that MLK Day is just another day off from school. It’s so much more than what people are holding it out to be. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January. It celebrates the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr., an influenced American civil rights leader and activist who had a great deal of influence on American society in the 1950s and 1960s. His strong belief in nonviolent protest helped set the tone of his movement. President Ronald Reagan signed a bill in the White House Garden that designates a federal holiday honoring King to be on the third Monday of January. King wanted equal treatment for all Americans not just white Americans. His “I had a dream...” speech was important in several ways. It brought greater attention to civil rights movement which has been going on for many years. Even though King is gone now, his speech and voice will always be remembered.

Insidious: The Last Key is surely a good thriller to start off the new year. The movie is about a parapsychologist named Elise Rainier who does an investigation on the haunted house she grew up in. While investigating this house, she’s set on destroying a demon that she set free in her childhood. The movie is definitely a must see. It has horror, good thrills, and some great comedy that people will enjoy. The film has an excellent storyline as well as good atmosphere that gives a good scare. By: O. Ashalintubbi
Teleportation: the theoretical transfer of matter or energy from one point to another without traveling the physical space between. There's three different kinds of teleportation: teleportation through a wormhole or something similar where your body is simply relocated to another place, the Star Trek kind where your molecules are disassembled, beamed somewhere else, and reassembled in the same way, and the philosophical problem kind where your body is scanned and the information is transmitted somewhere else to be used to build an entirely new body out of different materials. This article is over the last kind. This type of teleportation is possible due to a property of quantum mechanics called quantum entanglement. Quantum entanglement occurs when two or more particles are forced to hold mutually exclusive states so determining one simultaneously determines the other. For example, let's use a pair of gloves- each glove represents one part of a pair of entangled particles. One glove is placed in a box and sent to the north pole, while the other glove is placed in an identical box and sent to the south pole. Once the state of one glove is determined, the other is automatically known. If we take two particles, entangle them, and send one to the moon, then we can use that property of entanglement to teleport something between them. After that, it's just a matter of making an observation of the object you want to teleport which sends that information to the other entangled particle on the moon. Just like that, your object is teleported, assuming you have enough raw material on the other side. Of course, teleporting large objects or people is probably not going to happen anytime soon. Keeping particles entangled for a long period of time, over long distances, or along with objects larger than a few atoms is way beyond what current technology is capable of. However, this experiment has been performed multiple times with small particles, and scientists have managed to teleport various electrons, photons, and even entire molecules dozens of miles. Perhaps this same tech will be used to send you or your grandchildren to the moon someday. By D.Roquemore, G.Jones, M.Ephraim
After 3 years of not having snow, on January 15, Texas weather changed to a cold climate. Surprisingly, it didn’t get hot again until later that day. Later on that night, it started snowing. Every single student turned into news reporters on Snapchat, an app students use to socialize with their friends. “That was definitely a day to remember,” freshman Christen Smith said. “I had a snowball fight with my siblings. I also watched my baby brother and sister make snow angels.” Just because the weather was cold, it didn’t stop country kids from doing what they love. “I rode my ATVs and went sledding,” sophomore Carson Campbell said. Having a three day weekend turn into a five day weekend was exciting. To get texts from coaches saying we didn’t have school also really felt good. “Everybody posted that we didn’t have school Tuesday because it was supposed to snow” sophomore Alexis Gee said. “The next day, everyone posted we didn’t have school on Wednesday, and I was excited.” Most of the students took pictures in the snow. “I went outside to take one picture then went back into the house,” freshman Ja’Darryl Jones said. Even though the snow lasted for only three days, East Texas kids had fun. Hopefully the snow comes back later this year. By: J. Collins
The high school band has a very busy schedule ahead. On February 2, many students are competing in a solo and ensemble competition for the state. Solo and ensemble is a contest for individuals or small groups to see how well they can play a piece of music. They compete in front of a single judge, and the judge scores the group or person from 1-4: one being the best and four the worst. If they do make a 1 at region, they advance to the state level in Austin. They then play in front of college professors and get judged 1-4 once again to possibly earn a medal. The students and band director, Jeremy Hendrix, are hoping that they will get a 1 at the contest. “I think some will do good and others will do the best they can,” Hendrix said. “Hopefully many students will make it to state.” Most of the students are practicing everyday and trying their best to play the music well enough to get a one. “I believe my group will perform well and get a one,” sophomore Beau Creech said. “We have been practicing daily.” Preparing for a big contest can be stressful, but the students are not too worried because they know they are prepared. “I’m not stressed because we practice so much that I know we are ready and will do great,” Beau said. All 20 of the students going to solo and ensemble are preparing for this contest. As Hendrix helps the students, he also hopes they make it to state. By: A. Walker Have you ever noticed what amazing, artistic students we have here at EFHS? If you haven’t, let me tell you about some of their pieces. “I’m working on a piece called ‘Radiate Love’ right now,” junior Kelsie Marcantel said. “It’s for my friend who tragically passed away last year. I want the piece to serve as a memorial in a way to her because she was a very special person and a beautiful soul. I hope that everyone likes my piece, and I’m excited to see it finished.” Another student would like to share her project that’s more light-hearted and wacky. “The piece is called ‘My Face.’” junior Harleigh Whitehead said. “I wanted to make my piece different and add little, off-setting details so I did individual one-inch squares. I like how the picture truly resembles me in a strange way.” I hope now that you’ve heard of some of the talent this school contains, you will be more obligated to check out some of the other amazing works of art. Hearing weights drop on the floor and watching sweat drip from a person’s brow as they reach their personal best. It's time for powerlifting season to begin. Powerlifting is a sport in which competitors attempt three types of lifts in a set sequence. The powerlifting team has welcomed a new coach, Asa Basco, in hopes for a successful season. “I’m excited for the new coach, and I hope I can live up to his expectations,” junior Matthew Beasley said. Many students can’t wait to see what the season will bring and are determined that they are going to be better than last year. “I think we’re gonna do great this season, especially with Coach Basco helping us,” junior Cameron Caudle said. Powerlifting is a draw to many students because you continue to push your body to new limits and have the support of your teammates along the way. “I love pushing myself to new limits and looking at the progress I’ve made over the years,” sophomore Evey Crisp said. “I can't wait to have an awesome year with my team.” Be sure to come support our powerlifters at their next event. Bats flying, crowds hollering, and dust everywhere. Softball is finally here, and all the girls are ready for a great year. The girls softball team started practice on January 9th, and they have a scrimmage coming soon. “I’m not worried about anything this season,” sophomore Corrina Hall said. “I’m confident in the team.” The girls can't wait until softball starts so they can play the game they all love. “I’m most excited about playing 3rd this year and having a great season with a amazing team,” Corrina said. The girls all seem to feel the same way when it comes to their team. “My favorite thing about being part of such an amazing team is getting to be with my friends and getting to play a game we all love,” sophomore Sharleyne Dunlap said. Now that basketball season has started up, the boys have been working hard to achieve goals and win games. The boys have been preparing for games and working on getting better in practices. The season started off not so well, but they plan to make a come back for the playoffs. Some of the boys are happy with the way the season is going. “I am [happy] because we have a new head coach and good players,” junior Michael Ramirez said. Coach Johnson, the head coach, works with the boys everyday so they will be prepared for any team they may play. All the boys really enjoy playing basketball. It’s not all about the fun to them; they have passion for the sport. “ I like it a lot because it’s fun and it keeps me in shape. Also, I just enjoy playing basketball in general,” Michael said. Since the boys have been working hard in practice, there’s a major improvement in the way they play. The coach seems happy with the improvements they’ve made over the season. “Everyone has their chance this year,” Hayden Parker said. “Now, it’s completely different.” The boys plan on making the season the best one yet. The students of the month for January are seniors Justiss Dudley and Brianna “Bri” Chandler. Bri is the lovely daughter of Chris and Julie Chandler. The bright senior is involved in many extracurricular activities such as varsity softball, CX debate, student council, and National Honor Society. When the day begins, Bri can’t wait to get to her favorite class: forensics with Coach Basco. Off campus, the social butterfly is known to hang out with her multiple friends and go to the movies. Bri has her eyes set on attending Texas A&M University so that she may major in nutrition and go to medical school so she may help children as a pediatric endocrinologist. Justiss is the proud son of Gary and Carrie Cline. Ever the overachiever, the active young man is involved in one act play, football, track, powerlifting, and tennis. Of all the classes the academic is involved in, Justiss admits to calculus with Coach Commander to be his favorite. The young brainiac enjoys to do school work in and out of school. In the future, Justiss simply plans to make it to college. |
