When starting back to school on August 12, we welcomed new incoming freshman. High school will bring new challenges to the table and be quite a transition from middle school for these students. “I wish I would have been warned and more prepared for all of the new responsibilities,” freshman Cora Creech said. Even though highschool brings on new responsibilities, it can be full of excitement and new experiences. “I’m looking forward to cheering and an exciting football season,” freshman Katelyn Anderson said. Not only will new experiences be presented to the class of 2023 but so will new opportunities. “I’m enjoying freshman year because it has given me the chance to make new friends,” freshman Kennedy Davidson said.

It’s the start of a new school year which means marching season is starting. Most students look forward to the Friday night football games, whether it’s hot or cold. September through November are by far the most spirited months of the school year. “I always look forward to marching season and Friday night football games,” junior Jessica Collins said. “I also hope we go to state for marching this year since this is an advancement year.” The football boys and coaches have been practicing during the summer alongside the band members. They’ve worked for hours and hours in the sun to make sure this marching season is the absolute best. “Since I’m a band member I can surely say that this year will be the best in a long time,” sophomore Kamryn Trost said. Friday is the most anticipated day of the week. With all the teams working hard and the band marching crucial hours in the heat, most students expect more than just the first round of playoffs this year. “All I can say about this year is that everyone should be prepared,” sophomore Jamie Barton said. It’s back to school season, and it’s taking a real toll on everyone’s sleeping schedule. That being said, many students and faculty are excited for the new school year. Many teachers/ faculty members are excited to start school, but one person really tops the cake with their enthusiasm. Counselor Katilyn Woodley’s love for the school is what keeps her coming back every year. “I love coming back to school; I enjoy my job more and more every year,” Woodley said. “Seeing new and returning students makes me so happy, but what I’m most excited for is meeting with each senior to get everything ready for their graduation.” Due to the new school year, we have also acquired new teachers and classes, welcoming them into the Jacket family. “I am looking forward to the new A&P class with Coach Hurta,” senior Alyssa Robinson said. “I don’t think A&P will be much of a challenge, but if it is, I’m up for it! I am also excited that I may graduate early from the extra classes I have been taking.” Let’s not forget about our hard working athletics students. Many big games are to come, and our students are ready for the wins. “I’m super excited about basketball,” sophomore Gabe Richard said. “I’m also pumped about being a sophomore because that means one less year of highschool, but I know we’re going to have some big wins this year.” By: M. With the new school year and seasons beginning, we are introduced to new teachers and coaches that have a lot to offer. “I plan on helping students increase their knowledge and understanding of how history affects people today and be successful in various ways, academically and athletically,” coach/history teacher Chris Eppley said. Coach Oliver Deal is the head basketball coach and assistant football and track coach. He offers many skills to our athletic department. “I am very energetic, and I have a competitive spirit,” coach Deal said. “[I plan on] bringing the absolute best out of every athlete/kid I come in contact with.” The new coaches are not only a part of the athletic department but also contribute to the teaching staff. Coach Shuttlesworth is a prime example. “I teach world geography, world history and computer science,” coach Thomas Shuttlesworth said. The student body is excited to see what the new coaching staff has to offer not only athletically but academically. By: C. Barras
The football boys had their first two scrimmages on August 16 and 23. They are taking and learning from the things they’ve done during these scrimmages. Tonight the boys will play in the first district game of the season against White Oak. “After both scrimmages, I feel like we improved offensively and defensively,” senior Chris Smith said. Playing both of the pre-season games for the boys has taught them how to work together and become better as a whole and individually. “I think we’re a good team with a lot of talent and heart,” junior Hayden Parker said. “I think the start of the season will be a little slow, but I have full confidence that we will end up doing pretty good this season.” With the energy and the fight from the team, everyone is excited for the start of the season. “This year’s team is probably the best one I’ve been on,” senior Chris Smith said. “The energy from everyone is always there, and we’re going to get off to a great start!” By: J. Collins
With a new tennis coach, Larry Hurta, tennis will be getting a few new upgrades. Tennis will be moved to athletics, will get new supplies, a new shed to store the supplies in, and will begin to play fall tennis. Coach Hurta and the tennis team are very excited for these improvements. Even though Hurta has only been here for a few weeks, he has expressed good things about the school and his experience. “It’s been a great experience already,” Hurta said. “We’ve got a good foundation of players, and we can build off of that.” This year will be the first time tennis will be in athletics. Hurta believes that being in athletics will help the players become more prepared and better their skills. “We will do conditioning, we will hit the weight room, we will work a lot on the foundation, and play some matches,” Hurta said. “You win by working on your technique, by conditioning, and by playing matches. If you don’t have match experience, you won’t do well. ” This will also be the first year tennis will play tennis in the fall. The team will continue playing in the spring. “Right now we have a spring tennis season, and I have some people in my class in the fall,” Hurta said..” I’ve always played year round tennis, so the ones we have in the fall will play.” Hurta expects great things from his players. “I want our tennis players to play tennis everyday,” Hurta said. “I would like to leave this campus and have tennis players playing on the courts everyday.” This year, tennis will have a few upgraded equipment pieces that Hurta will bring in, and they will be getting a shed to store this equipment in. “I want to bring enough equipment to really practice good,” Hurta said. “This shed will keep us from having to transport everything. We will be taking care off the shed, getting a new floor in it, and we will be painting it. It will help to keep everything locked up and keep people from taking our equipment. I’m thankful to get it.” Hurta also mentioned the former tennis coach, Kelli Ford, and how he was grateful for her. “The former tennis coach did good here, and for me to come here, she volunteered to step down from coaching,” Hurta said. “That’s a big deal; for her to do that means a lot really.” The players are excited for a great new start. “I am excited the team is growing and for us to be able to learn about our sport,” junior Kyndal King said. “I feel like being in athletics will help us better ourselves and how we play. I can’t wait for a great year.” Overall, Hurta and all the players are looking forward to a great year for tennis. By: T. Ford
The varsity volleyball team has gotten a new coach this year in replacement of Coach Macy Cherry; the new coach is Katherine Wilson. Wilson taught at Terrell as a 7th-8th grade english teacher and Junior High coach for 2 years, and she has been at Elysian Fields as an 8th grade English/reading teacher for six years. She has now stepped up to take the coaching position, and she still teaches as well. “My favorite part about coaching is working with each athlete on their position and bringing it/them out together when we play,” Wilson said. “ I also love watching their success grow.” Since she has been coaching the team, she has noticed some things about the players. “They work so well as a team, and they are all friends outside of the gym,” Wilson said. “They all have great chemistry.” Wilson has her own ways to help the team through their obstacles throughout the season but not just physically. “I train them to be mentally tough,” Wilson said. “I’m always right there with them, pushing through the hard times.” Wilson is hoping to see much progress in the girls and will be proud of them too. “I want to see them grow athletically and as young adults,” Wilson said. Wilson is looking forward to a fun winning season, and the team is working hard to fulfill that. The team will continue to work hard and keep learning with their new coach. |
